Decide which target to focus on

Avoid pitfalls

  1. When choosing a target, you may feel more comfortable to focus on practices that relate to acute events (outcomes such as length of stay, number of admissions, etc.). Remember that the focus should be on the chronic management of the disease and aimed at prevention (e.g. prevention of exacerbations, complications).
  2. People often try to do everything at once; it is not the best approach, and likely to discourage you.
  3. Quality indicators must strike a balance between scientific evidence and what is practical and feasible. Many aspects of what is considered optimal COPD treatment can be provided at your institution.

Remember that outcomes should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-oriented, Time frames.
